Picric acid is an aromatic polynitrated acid. It dissolves in water to create a low-pH solution (pH 2.0). It interacts with basic protein groups, forming salts and coagulating them. Fixation with picric acid produces a brilliant stain; however, due to the low pH of the solution, nucleic acids may be lost.
Picric acid is very unstable and is a flammable/combustible material.
